Name: Bantigue
Scientific: Pemphis acidula
A.K.A.: Ironwood Mangrove, Mentigi, Drini, Stigi, Bwadamann
Notes: A hardy, coastal shrub or small tree valued for its twisted wood, ornamental use, and ecological role in mangrove and littoral zones. It thrives in sandy and calcareous soils, often along rocky shores, beaches, and mangrove fringes, and can be semi-submerged during high tide. It is widely distributed across the tropical Indo-Pacific, including eastern Africa (Somalia to Mozambique), the Seychelles, Madagascar, India, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and northern Australia. The species is highly adaptive, forming dense thickets or low spreading bushes depending on environmental conditions. The wood is extremely hard, heavy, and resistant to rot and warping, making it valuable for house construction, fence posts, tool handles, anchors, and traditional shipbuilding in the Maldives.
