Name: California Bay
Scientific: Umbellularia californica
A.K.A.: California Laurel, California Nutmeg, California Olive, Californian Bay, Oregon Myrtle, Headachetree
Notes: A large hardwood tree native to coastal forests and the Sierra foothills of California, and to coastal forests extending into Oregon. It mostly inhabits redwood forests, California mixed woods, yellow pine forest, and oak woodlands. It is the sole species in the genus Umbellularia. The tree's pungent leaves have a similar flavour to bay leaves, though stronger, and it may be mistaken for bay laurel. The dry wood has a colour range from blonde (like maple) to brown (like walnut) and is considered an excellent tonewood sought after by luthiers and woodworkers.
