The Nesserathi are a benevolent humanoid alien race with subtle serpentine features, who helped humanity survive a far more malevolent alien invasion. Mamba is one of them.
Among the Nesserathi, nakedness carries no shame.
Skin, shape, and even near-nudity bear no social burden.
But as Mamba grew closer to a human man, she began to notice the way humans looked at them together.
It was not simple curiosity.
It was the particular stiffness reserved for couples whose very existence seemed to trouble inherited ideas of what should belong with what.
So she began borrowing small human signals of familiarity: a wig, a pair of eyebrows, the little things that might soften her difference.
Not because she was ashamed of herself, but because she thought it might spare the man who mattered to her some part of that gaze,
never quite realizing that he cared far less about it than she did.
In bright light, Mamba's eyes naturally narrow into the more serpentine shape of her kind.
The same change can happen in moments of strong emotion, especially when instinct overwhelms control.
Her tongue does not change.
