Mophead’s Crest of Dreams
Upon the dawn, where sunbeams crest,
Two Polish hens stood proud and bright,
Mophead with her tangled nest,
And Harley bold, a striking sight.
The step perch rose, a shining throne,
Where bigger hens would peck and shove,
Mophead yearned to touch that zone—
A place where she might find pure love.
“Why push me down?” her plaintive call,
“My mop’s no curse but crown to wear!”
Yet jealous eyes would mock and maul,
And pecks would sting her precious hair.
Her voice rang loud through coo and cluck,
“Harley friend, come aid my plea!”
But Harley turned—no sound or luck—
Unmoved beneath the orchard tree.
Each day she climbed with hope anew,
Though feathers ruffled, heart unbowed;
For one day soon the crew once few—
Murderpeep and kin so proud—
Would see beyond that mop of white,
The beauty in her steadfast gaze;
A mate for days both soft and bright,
Companion true through all their days.
With faith she held her crest up high,
Though shadows tried to dim her gleam;
Her dreams as vast as open sky—
More than a mop: a shining beam.
So come the time when hearts will mend,
And jealous pecks will cease to be;
For Mophead waits to find a friend—
The perfect hen she's meant to be.
