A good backdrop card or 2 can help round out a scene without bringing your computer to its knees. Scale and move it to complement the foreground and sky.
There are 6 variations on the arid ridge: bare, small bushes, larger bushes/small trees, dense pine, a mix of pine with some dead pines, and a more thin mix of pine and dead pine.
Each variation is provided with 4 types of lighting: backlit, left, overhead, and right. These will cover most lighting needs you may have.
Finally, increasing diffuse overlay weight will kick in a blue-gray haze effect, easily creating a sense of distance to further separate one or more cards.
