The great human losses during the first months of the Great War caused designers to find answers to the question if these losses could replace some sort of machine - a simple mechanical soldier capable of doing the same thing as human soldier - running forward, firing the the gun until it reaches designated target or will be destroyed. For this purpose, a simple design and construction should be used so the production price will be low as possible and such machine will be easily replaceable or repairable. Eventually, this goal was achieved by the producers who flooded the all fronts with these simple mechanical soldiers. Their construction, operation and maintenance were so simple that they soon struggled against each other on all sides of the conflict. Often it was enough to just repair enemy machines that penetrated into trenches and sent them back in the opposite direction. The absurdity of war gained with this a new level, but anyway many human lives were saved by these machines.
