The TIE line, or TIE series, was a series of starfighters manufactured by Sienar Fleet Systems and later Sienar-Jaemus Fleet Systems, distinguished by their twin ion engines and solar collector panels. There were dozens of different models.
The TIE Advanced v1 was an experimental TIE fighter model for the Imperial Navy. It was heavily based on the Republic's own Fleet Systems Scimitar. The starfighter was equipped with basic shields, and unlike the TIE Advanced x1, the v1's S-wings could be folded around the cockpit when not in flight, conserving hangar space. Unusual for a TIE model, it had solar panels only on the inner surface of the wings with armor on the outer surfaces to make it more resistant to lateral enemy fire. This resulted in low power output from the panels, requiring the engines to run on fuel rather than the solar reactor, which only powered weapons, sensors, and auxiliary systems. The TIE Advanced v1 was armed with double-chinned laser cannons, stronger than those of the TIE/ln space superiority starfighter, and a projectile launcher, used to fire tracking devices such as the S XX-23 threaded tracker. Unlike most other TIE models, the v1 was equipped with a hyperdrive and basic shields.
Characteristics:
When designing the starfighters of its TIE Line, Sienar Fleet Systems drew heavily on Kuat Engineering Systems ship designs, such as the V-wing Interceptor and Eta-2. Sienar also experimented with advanced models featuring localized enhancements and secret technological advances, including the TIE Advanced v1 prototype, based on the Scimitar Star Runner. This prototype led to the TIE Advanced x1, which featured a hyperdrive and deflector shield generator. A modified early prototype of the Advanced x1 line was flown by Darth Vader himself. Vader's fighter boasted increased speed and increased firepower, with fixed-mounted blaster cannons and a cluster-type rocket launcher. Vader specified a custom cockpit to accommodate his armored suit, and high-output solar cells were installed on the starfighter's curved wings.
History:
As of 4 BBY, the Sith Lord Darth Vader owned and operated a modified experimental prototype of the TIE Advanced x1, which he piloted into the midst of a Rebel fleet in a daring attack that resulted in the destruction of the Rebel flagship, Home Phoenix. . He later used it to travel to Malachor to fight his former Padawan, Ahsoka Tano.
During 0 BBY, during the Battle of Yavin, Vader again piloted his TIE Advanced x1 to pursue and kill Rebel fighters attacking the first Death Star. He shot down several until his fighter was unexpectedly eliminated from the battle when a TIE/ln space superiority starfighter collided with him after a surprise attack by the Millennium Falcon. After the collision, Vader spun out of control in space, thus escaping the destruction of the Death Star. The ship was disabled and left to float in the battle station's debris field, though Vader and his ship were later picked up by a Gozanti-class cruiser piloted by Ciena Ree and Berisse Sai.
After the Battle of Yavin, the Alliance to Restore the Republic provided stolen examples of the ship to the Band of Saponza.
