VZ-9 Avrocar Flying Saucer

The VZ-9 Avrocar was conceived as a vertical take-off and landing aircraft that could achieve supersonic speed at altitude. In the late 1950s the US Air Force and Army awarded Avro Canada a secret contract to build and test two prototypes. The declassified flight evaluation report refers to the Avrocar as "an unconventional aircraft having a circular planform", essentially a flying saucer. The test vehicles used the exhaust from three jet engines to drive a central turbo-rotor. The turbo-rotor forced air through various radial ducts and exhausts, varied according to the flight regime. Numerous design changes improved handling and control of hovering and moving in ground effect, but flight above 2 or 3 feet speed and control suffered. The evaluation report concluded that "modifications to the control system and the propulsive system will be necessary before a ground effect transition into high speed forward flight can be demonstrated". The test program ended in 1961 and was not extended. Both test articles are now in museums, one restored, one awaiting restoration.

The VZ-9 Avrocar 3D model is a fully-rigged Poser figure, sized for Poser people.
