WW2 American M4A1 Mortar Carriage Halftrack

During WW2 there were three versions of mortar carriers based on half-tracks. The first vehicle issued, the Halftrack 81 mm Mortar Carrier M4, was standartized in October 1940. As with later models, six men crewed the vehicle, and the mortar, which could throw it round 3000 metres, was mounted in the bed of an M2 halftrack to dismount the weapon under normal circuimstances. An improved model, the M4A1, was standartized in December 1942 and sported a stronger bed that allowed the mortar to fire routinely form within the vehicle. Each M4 variant was also equipped woth a .30-caliber machine gun that could be mounted on the gun rail or on a tripod, a bazooka, and one submachine gun. A total of 1172 vehicles were produced. Finally, the Halftrack 81 mm Mortar Carrier M21, based on the M3 halftrack, entered service in July 1943.
