Life in the Zone, however, has its pitfalls. The omnipresent radiation, mutated organisms, and other harmful influences can often cause irreversible changes to the human body and psyche. Stalkers, soldiers, technicians, or scientists exposed to intense radiation or psionic emissions have ceased to be human, turning into lifeless wrecks and phantoms that pose a threat to others. Their protective suits have fused to their skin, leaving only fragments of gas masks, and they now wander the land without any memory of their original purpose or intent.
