Period: Early to Late Devonian. 420 to 370 million years ago.
Notes: An extinct plant considered among the earliest land plants to possess true leaves representing a significant evolutionary step in the development of vascular plants. First discovered in Scotland; fossils have since been recovered in Russia, China, and in Egypt. They were among the earliest land plants and is notably differentiated from other plants of this wea by its thicker stems. Foliage is described as firm and spiny, though recovered fossils rarely retain leaf detail.
