Eric, also known as the Phantom of the Opera, is a fictional character from Gaston Leroux's novel "The Phantom of the Opera" and subsequent adaptations, including the famous musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The setting in which Eric, the Phantom, is depicted as living is the iconic and mysterious underground lair beneath the Paris Opera House. The lair is situated deep below the grandiose Paris Opera House, hidden from the eyes of the general public. It is a labyrinthine network of catacombs, chambers, and passageways, creating an eerie and claustrophobic atmosphere. The lair itself is a reflection of Eric's troubled psyche, a sanctuary he has crafted for himself due to his physical deformities and his self-imposed isolation from the world.
The Phantom's dwelling is often described as a macabre and gothic place, filled with an array of peculiar objects and artifacts. Candles and dim lighting cast eerie shadows on the walls, adding to the sense of mystery and darkness. The air is heavy with an otherworldly ambiance, and the sound of water dripping and echoes reverberating through the chambers adds to the haunting atmosphere. Within the lair, Eric has created his own private domain, including a bedroom and a workshop. The workshop is where he spends countless hours creating his elaborate stage sets, masquerade costumes, and his infamous musical compositions. It is adorned with various musical instruments, drafts of unfinished compositions, and shelves filled with books and manuscripts, showcasing his artistic genius and obsession with music. Despite its eerie and foreboding nature, the underground lair also holds a certain allure and enchantment. It serves as a refuge for Eric, a place where he can escape the judgment and rejection of society and indulge in his passion for music and art. However, it is also a prison of his own making, trapping him in a world of solitude and unrequited love.
The setting of Eric's lair beneath the Paris Opera House has become an integral part of the Phantom of the Opera's iconic imagery, contributing to the enduring fascination and intrigue surrounding this tragic character. In this second part of EricĀ“s undergound abode we bring you more priovate spaces, like bedroom, study with library and the desk where Eric is writing the score for his grandiose opera Don Juan Triumphant.
