Soviet Snow Tank

Soviet Snow Tank

Snow Tank is in fact a prototype of Soviet armored aerosans O2SS from 1940-1941. According to the original assignment, these sleds were to weigh three and a half tons with armor with a thickness of 5-7 mm and armament of a 23 mm cannon and DT machine gun. The aerosans, which were structurally based on tunguska dog sleds, were powered by an aircraft engine Klimov M-130 used in bombers. However, this made the prototype significantly more expensive. The construction of the sleigh was assigned to the Lenigrad shipbuilding design office - (the Central design office, according to which the prototype is sometimes referred to as CKB (TSKB)- 50) and their experience with shipbuilding unfortunately had an adverse effect on the construction of the sleigh. For control the sleigh, they chose a pair of rudders in the back of the skis. However, these rudders could not turn the heavy machine properly, it still thrived in deep snow from time to time, but on heavy snow or on roads, the sleds was practically unmanageable. In the end, the project was stopped, especially due to the high price of the prototype and the weight, which increased to five and a half tons during production.
