History:
R7 Astromech Units
The R7-series astromech droid was a highly advanced astromech droid with a distinctive triangular lens produced by Industries Automaton shortly after the Battle of Endor. The R7 series was designed specifically for use in the New Republic's E-wing escort starfighter.
The development of the R7-series was a corporate secret, occurring during the media backlash surrounding the production of the R6-series astromech droid. The R7 unit featured two wheeled legs and a retractable third leg, and were highly protected against electrical shock. These droids were primarily used aboard FreiTek's E-wing escort starfighters, and required significant modifications to work effectively with X-wing or Y-wing starfighters. A typical R7 unit could hold fifteen hyperspace jump coordinates in its memory banks and could survive a near-failure of an ion cannon.
A hacked version of the R7's advanced droid brain was also incorporated into the Imperial XR-85 droid tank.
If R7-A7 and R7-F5 are R7-series astromech droids, that would cause a continuity issue, since the R7 units weren't made until the Battle of Endor, however the two droids could have been prototypes of the R7-series astromech droid. R7.
R7-D4 has the nickname "R7" but was created before the release of R7. However, the two initial symbols of a droids name do not always connote the model series, as they are part of a longer name.
