Deep in the mountains of Japan lies a mountainous area known for its population of wild monkeys. They say in ancient times that a huge oni who had taken on the appearance of a monkey lived there and ruled over the region. And that is how the area got its name, Enkisan.
A temple was built on the side of the mountain in order to satiate and keep the monkey demon peaceful and at rest. And local hot springs also were built over the centuries. Travellers said the fall was the prettiest time to visit. During the height of the Showa era, tourism boomed and the local merchants played up the monkey connection with local souvenirs and stores catering to the tourists.
Sadly, with the bust of the bubble period and the decreasing population, the lack of tourism has dried up. The temple itself has fallen into a state of disrepair and no one has seen the priest there in some time. Needless to say, this is not the booming tourist town it was before. But the monkeys and the legends are still there. Even to this day they claim that strange sightings of large, hulking, half human half monkey creatures can be seen in the forest. Not much is left in the area and there's only one lone bus line and bus stop that serves the area. Hope you don't miss the last bus…
