Legions of Rome

Legions of Rome

Legions of Rome is a material expansion product for Far From Home - Roman Legionary, though it DOES NOT require Roman Legionary for purchase.

Throughout the peak of it's empire, Rome had many legions guarding the borders and each legion took on their own unique emblems. It is a common misconception that every Roman legion of the Imperial era took the eagle wings and the thunderbolt as it's insignia; in fact there is historical evidence to support that only up to four legions (that we know of) that utilized the wings and thunderbolt emblem.

Most legions used symbols that typified the preferences of the commander or benefactors (as wealthy nobleman often paid to raised their own legions), or they used emblems that evinced the culture of the men who populated that particular legion. Given that Italian recruits comprised 90% or more of each legion up until about 100 AD, most emblems were associated with sacred animals of Roman culture, such as the bull, the lion, and the eagle.

As the decades progressed, and threats increased as the empire grew, legion composition began to change as more and more recruits were sourced from the provinces. As the legions changed, so did their emblems. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Parthica were recruited from Greece, Macedonia, and Thrace to support campaigns in Parthia, and they had the centaur (which was very common in Greek Mythology) emblazoned on their shields. Another example, the 2nd Traiana had recruited heavily from the occupied German provinces in the second century, and this is evidenced by the lightening bolts flanked by two hammers of their shields (the ancient Germanic tribes revered Donar, who was the god of thunder and a clear precursor to Thor).

Legions of Rome is Next Level's next installment in the Roman Series. Roman Legionary IS NOT required for this product, as it comes with a stand-alone shield prop.
