Whaleback Steamship

Whaleback Steamship

Alexander McDougall, a Great Lakes seaman, designed a vessel optimized for use on the Great Lakes. The McDougall design, described in several patents had a long hull with a nearly square lower cross-section and a rounded top. The width or beam was constant for most of its length, but tapered to narrow disks at either end. When fully laden the hull was submerged except for the curved deck, leading to the descriptive "whaleback" name. There was little freeboard and the deck would be awash in rough seas. Small cylindrical towers, one located at the bow for a capstan to handle anchor chain and several at the stern to support a raised cabin and bridge deck.

The Whaleback Steamship is a fully-rigged Poser figure, sized for Poser people, with a full bridge with operating helm, binnacle, and engine telegraph. The Whaleback can be configured for four different lengths. For fun an imaginary warship version with operating Nordenfelt guns is included.

(The model was built for Poser but loads and operates in DAZ Studio – see the ReadMe for particulars).
