Jack the Ripper was an unidentified serial killer active in and around the impoverished Whitechapel district of London, England, in the autumn of 1888. In both criminal case files and the contemporaneous journalistic accounts, the killer was called the Whitechapel Murderer and Leather Apron. Attacks ascribed to Jack the Ripper typically involved female prostitutes who lived and worked in the slums of the East End of London. The case of Jack the Ripper is one of the most famous unsolved crimes, and has been covered in countless works of art and entertainment. It is almost always associated with the dark backdrop of the streets of Victorian London, shrouded in darkness and fog, illuminated by rare lanterns. Our images are meant to help evoke this atmosphere, but they are also suitable for a number of other projects, whether historical or steampunk or other.
