Mace Windu was a human Jedi Master and member of the Jedi High Council during the final days of the Galactic Republic. Born on the planet Haruun Kal, Windu was trained in the ways of the Force due to his strong connection to it. Rising to the rank of Master, he became known as the champion of the Jedi Order, an honor he carried on for years after his death. At some point in his career, Windu went on to serve as Master of the Order, the elected leader of the Jedi Order.
Approximately twenty-two years before the Battle of Yavin, Windu witnessed the decline of the Republic due to the Separatist Crisis, which plunged the galaxy into the Clone Wars. The Confederacy of Independent Systems, which had seceded from the Republic by force, began to pose a threat to the Republic. Windu and the Jedi then became part of the Grand Army of the Republic to defend the old democracy from the Separatist armies.
Throughout the Clone Wars, Windu served the Order and the Republic both on the battlefield and on Coruscant, advising Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine. He also served as a diplomat despite his disdain for politics. His exploits on the battlefield earned him a huge reputation as a Jedi warrior.
As the war drew to a close, Windu's suspicions of the Chancellor's intentions grew, not least due to Palpatine's almost dictatorial control over the Senate. He too sensed the rising power of the dark side of the Force and ultimately sensed a plot to destroy the Jedi Order. Concerned for the future of the Republic and the Jedi, he recommended that the Jedi Council remove Palpatine from office and take control of the Senate to ensure a peaceful transition to a new government.
His suspicions came true when Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker informed him of the Chancellor's true identity: Palpatine was Darth Sidious, the Dark Lord of the Sith who was manipulating the Republic and the Separatists into clashing, making him the absolute ruler. of the Galaxy. Determined to save the Order and the Republic before it was too late, Windu set out to confront the Chancellor with the help of Jedi Masters Kit Fisto, Agen Kolar, and Saesee Tiin. His intention was to arrest Sidious to try him for treason against the Republic.
Armed with a red lightsaber, Sidious killed his Jedi adversaries with the exception of Windu, who faced the Sith alone. After a brief duel, Windu disarmed Sidious and pointed his lightsaber at him. At the time, Windu felt that a trial was too risky, since Sidious was in control of the courts, and decided to execute him. However, an emotionally unstable Skywalker entered the scene and cut off Windu's arm. Palpatine blasted Windu with Force lightning and threw him through a window. Following Windu's death, the Jedi Order and the Republic fell, with the Galactic Empire rising in its place.
During the reign of Emperor Sheev Palpatine, Imperial propaganda fueled anti-Jedi sentiment by spreading lies about them, including the late Mace Windu. Seeking to blame the Jedi for the outbreak of the Clone Wars, the Empire falsely claimed that Windu was the leader of a "criminal gang" that had interfered with a legal execution on the planet Geonosis prior to the ensuing First Battle of Geonosis. Despite Imperial propaganda, some of Windu's true deeds were fondly and gratefully remembered by the people he had helped during the war. In particular, the Twi'leks immortalized Windu's name in "The Hammer of Ryloth", a song dedicated to the liberation of the planet Ryloth.
