History:
R5 Astromech Units
The R5-series astromech droid, also known as the R2-5, was a line of low-cost astromech droids built by Industrial Automaton. Based on the success of previous astromech models such as the popular R2 series, Industrial Automaton intended the R5 series to suit budget buyers at the cost of some features.
The R5 Astromech Droid discredited its manufacturer for saving means in its development, which is why it is considered an inferior droid. Unlike its predecessors, built for specific sectors, the R5 was built saving and lowering costs throughout its development process.
The droid exhibited many mechanical problems, such as stuck servo systems and chronic overheating. In addition to serious attitude problems over time, developing eccentric and unpleasant behavior patterns.
Astromech Droid Unit R5
Height: 0.97m.
Accessories: welding arc, circular saw, em field sensor unit, manipulator arm, fire extinguisher, powerful grip arm, holographic projector, 3 photoreceptors.
Design: Industrial Automation.
In terms of equipment, it had all the basics of an R Unit. However, these were very often broken or damaged over time. With a casing similar to its predecessor R4, but not as prominent. They also had memory for a single hyperspace jump. Although the Rebel Alliance was able to fill these gaps by adding modifiers that substantially increased its life, utility and performance.
Jabba's R5-X2
It belonged to Jabba the Hutt, and was responsible for calculating his earnings in podracers races and predicting outcomes to benefit his master in betting.
R5-M2
Its owner was the charismatic officer of the Rebel Alliance, Shawn Valdez. He was instrumental in the evacuation of Echo Base during the Battle of Hoth.
R5-D2 (R5-G8)
It was owned by Rebellion pilot Wedge Antilles, though it had been used by another pilot before. He nicknamed him "The Mynock", as he screamed like one of these creatures whenever he entered combat. Finally Wedje got tired of him and had his memory erased. Zraii, his mechanic, took the opportunity to update his software and was renamed R5-G8, nicknamed "Puerta".
R5-L4
He worked for the New Republic as Kyp Durron's X-wing astromech until 25 years after the Battle of Yavin. He was one of the first casualties of the New Republic's encounters with the Yuuzhan Vong.
R5-D4
It is the droid that the Jawas wanted to sell to Uncle Owen in 'Episode IV', and that we already saw in 'Episode I' and that reappeared in the series 'The Mandalorian'.
