R2-D2 is a fictional character from the Star Wars Universe. He is an astromech droid, counterpart, and friend to C-3PO.
Character story:
R2-D2, an R2-Units robot, belonged to the defense forces on Naboo and served King Veruna during his term. This droid was always housed in the Royal Naboo Ship, like other congeners with the simple function of repairing any part of the ship and assisting as navigators. R2-D2 belonged to a type of robot called astromech droids (Astro Droids) that were well known and appreciated throughout the Galaxy.
R2-D2 saved Queen Padm- Amidala's life when they escaped a Federation trade blockade, and accompanied her the rest of her journey to Tatooine and Coruscant. When they took Naboo, R2-D2 was housed in the navigator space of the small space fighter that Anakin Skywalker used to dive into the depths of the main Trade Federation ship and destroy it to pieces.
R2-D2 accompanied Padm- and Anakin throughout their entire journey ten years later to Naboo and Tatooine to escape the assassination attempts suffered by the senator. He ended up with C-3PO on Geonosis where he saved Padm- Amidala's life and shortly after he rebuilt C-3PO in the execution arena, After that he accompanied Anakin in many battles like Kristophsis in addition to accompanying him and his Padawan helped to recover the son of Jabba the Hutt after that he collaborated with the destruction of the malevolence as Anakin's auxiliary shortly after during an air battle General Skywalker's ship exploded leaving the droid in the hands of General Grievous who would be rescued by Anakin in addition to contribute to the destruction of a separatist battle sphere. shortly thereafter he helped Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi rescue the Chancellor.
When Padme Amidala died following the delivery of Luke and Leia, Senator Organa ordered C-3PO's memory erased, but R2-D2 preserved the memory and later recognized Obi-wan (Ben) Kenobi on Tatooine.
Years later R2-D2 and C-3PO became part of the Royal House of Alderaan and owned by Captain Antilles. When Darth Vader attacked the Tantive IV, both droids managed to escape, after Princess Leia Organa placed the plans for the Death Star inside R2-D2.
After leaving the Tantive IV in an escape pod they both fell to the planet Tatooine where they were bought by Luke Skywalker and his uncle Owen Lars. R2-D2 went out on his mission to bring the plans to Obi-Wan Kenobi who lived in a hut near Luke's farm and thus sealed the fate of the galaxy. When Obi-Wan Kenobi rescues Luke Skywalker from the sand dwellers, Luke tells Obi Wan that R2-D2 belongs to him, but Obi Wan replies that he does not remember having that droid. Luke Skywalker's uncles were executed by the empire's soldiers. The Galactic Empire was searching for the two androids, which had led them to Luke's farm.
After this R2-D2 was incorporated into the Rebel Alliance and as a navigator for Luke's X-wing, he assisted in the destruction of the Death Star. Thus he continued in the company of C-3PO, Han Solo, Leia Organa and Chewbacca on the side of the rebel causes and against the Galactic Empire.
R2-D2 was present on Endor and assisted the rebels in taking the shield generator that protected the second Death Star. In the end he celebrated with all the rebels the fall of the Empire and the establishment of a new era.
